Almeida Law Group Secures Final Approval of Class Action Settlement in Loyola Patient Privacy Litigation
Overview
Almeida Law Group is pleased to announce that the Honorable Jeremy C. Daniel of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has granted final approval of a class action settlement in Smith v. Loyola University Medical Center, Case No. 1:23-cv-15828.
The litigation involves allegations that Loyola University Medical Center unlawfully installed and used tracking technologies on its website and patient portal, to collect and disclose patients’ personally identifiable information to third parties. Plaintiffs alleged that this conduct violated patient privacy rights and caused harm to thousands of individuals who accessed the portal between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2022.
In a comprehensive order issued on September 17, 2025, Judge Daniel finally certified the class for settlement purposes, approved the terms of the settlement agreement, appointed Plaintiffs as the Settlement Class Representatives, appointed Almeida Law Group and Jennings & Earley PLLC as Class Counsel and dismissed the case with prejudice. The Court found that the settlement was fair, reasonable and adequate.
