Final Approval Granted in University of Rochester Patient Privacy Class Action

Overview

Judge Mark W. Pedersen of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York granted final approval of the class action settlement in Kane v. University of Rochester, Case No. 6:23-cv-6027-MJP, resolving claims over alleged unauthorized disclosures of patient data. 

We are pleased to announce that the Honorable Mark W. Pedersen of the United States District Court for the Western District of New York has granted final approval of the class action settlement in Kane v. University of Rochester, Case No. 6:23-cv-6027-MJP. 

The litigation involved allegations that the University of Rochester improperly disclosed sensitive patient information through tracking technologies embedded on its website. The certified class includes over 650,000 individuals who accessed MyChart between January 11, 2021 and January 11, 2023 or submitted forms on URMC’s public website between January 1, 2018 and June 12, 2023. The Court previously granted preliminary approval on April 10, 2025 and has now found the settlement to be fair, reasonable, and adequate under Rule 23(e).
