About Lansing Community College
Lansing Community College (LCC) is a public community college founded in 1957, with its main campus in downtown Lansing, Michigan. It is one of the largest community colleges in Michigan, serving more than 13,000 students each year and offering over 200 associate degree and certificate programs, as well as career and workforce development options. Because LCC maintains records for students, employees, and others it has worked with over the years, a breach of its systems can expose a broad range of sensitive personal information.
What Happened?
Lansing Community College was listed in a Maine Attorney General filing reported on June 5, 2026. According to that filing and LCC’s breach notice, on February 18, 2025, LCC identified unauthorized access to certain systems in its network environment. Investigation determined that an unauthorized actor had gained access through credential compromise on approximately February 12, 2025. The incident is classified as an external system breach (hacking). A total of 174,307 individuals were affected. The personal information involved varied by individual and included name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license, or other information provided to or maintained by LCC. LCC states it has no evidence that information was removed from its systems or misused. Consumer notification was sent on June 5, 2026—roughly 15.5 months after the breach was discovered. LCC is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection through Epiq-Privacy Solutions.
This is the second major cybersecurity incident at LCC in approximately two years. A prior breach occurring between December 25, 2022, and March 15, 2023, compromised names and Social Security numbers of approximately 757,832 individuals, including students, employees, and vendors. That breach resulted in a $1.45 million class action settlement (In re Lansing Community College Data Breach Litigation, Case No. 1:23-cv-00738-PLM-RSK, U.S. District Court, Western District of Michigan), which received final court approval on January 23, 2025, but is currently on appeal at the Sixth Circuit (Case No. 25-1130, appeal filed February 7, 2025). No litigation specific to the February 2025 breach has been identified to date.
