About Strategic Education Inc.
Strategic Education Inc. (NASDAQ: STRA) is a publicly traded education services holding company headquartered in Herndon, Virginia. It owns for-profit, primarily online universities including Capella University and Strayer University, along with non-degree programs and the Workforce Edge employer tuition-benefits platform. The breach exposed names combined with Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and passport numbers — categories of information that carry significant identity theft risk.
What Happened?
Strategic Education Inc. was listed in a Maine Attorney General data breach filing reported on June 1, 2026. According to the filing and the accompanying notice, an unauthorized actor accessed SEI’s computer servers between February 23, 2026 and February 25, 2026 and exfiltrated copies of certain files. The incident was classified as an external system breach (hacking). SEI did not discover the breach until May 21, 2026 — approximately 87 days after the initial unauthorized access. The compromised files contained names and one or more of the following: Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and passport numbers. SEI began mailing notification letters to affected individuals on May 29, 2026, eight days after discovery. The total number of persons affected nationwide was not disclosed in the filing.
No ransomware group or specific threat actor has been publicly linked to this incident based on available reporting, and no litigation connected to this breach has been identified. This incident is unrelated to the widely reported May 2026 Instructure/Canvas breach; SEI’s breach involved its own internal computer network.
