UEI College Data Breach–What You Need to Know & What to Do Next

Overview

UEI College reported a cybersecurity incident after the Termite ransomware group claimed responsibility for an attack in late May 2026. The incident potentially exposed personal and educational data belonging to students, faculty, staff, and employees across multiple campuses.

UEI College, operated by International Education Corporation (IEC) and founded in 1982, is a private for-profit career college with 22 campuses across seven U.S. states. The college operates locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, and Washington, serving students throughout the region.

UEI College specializes in short-term technical and vocational education programs designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in industries including healthcare, business, criminal justice, welding, HVAC, and other skilled trades. Most programs are nine months in length.

According to ransomware threat intelligence, Termite posted UEI College to its data leak site on May 30, 2026, with an estimated attack date of May 29, 2026. The threat actor has threatened to release sensitive data unless negotiations are initiated. Specific details about the types and volume of data allegedly stolen have not been publicly disclosed.

Termite has been active since at least September 2025 and has claimed attacks across multiple sectors including education, financial services, government, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and technology.

What Information May Have Been Exposed In the UEI College Data Breach?

As of this writing, specific details about the types and volume of data allegedly stolen have not been publicly disclosed. However, educational institutions typically maintain student records including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, student ID numbers, educational records and transcripts, financial aid information, tuition and payment records, email addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contact information.

Employee and staff records may include names, addresses, Social Security numbers, salary information, employment history, background check information, and other personnel data.

Given UEI College’s size and multi-campus operation, the potential number of affected individuals could be substantial, potentially including current and former students, faculty, and staff across all 22 locations.

How UEI College Responded to the Breach?

As of this writing, UEI College has not issued a public statement regarding the alleged ransomware attack. The college has not confirmed the incident or provided details about its investigation or notification plans.

Educational institutions that experience breaches involving personal information are required to notify affected individuals under various federal and state data breach notification laws. Each of the seven states where UEI College operates has data breach notification requirements that would apply to the institution.

How to Check If Your Personal Info Is Exposed

If you are a current or former student of UEI College, or an employee or staff member at any of the college’s 22 campuses, your personal and educational records may have been exposed in this breach.

Monitoring your accounts, reviewing credit reports, and watching for notification letters from UEI College are crucial steps in assessing your potential exposure.

What You Can Do If Your Information Was Exposed

If your personal information may have been part of the UEI College breach, review your financial accounts and credit reports for any unfamiliar activity. Update account passwords, particularly for student portals or employee systems where you may have reused passwords.

Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). Given that Social Security numbers are commonly maintained in educational records, monitor for signs of identity theft.

Be cautious of phishing attempts following this breach. Scammers may send emails or texts claiming to be from UEI College or educational services. Verify any communications independently before responding or clicking links. Acting now can limit the long-term consequences and protect your personal and financial information.
