Attorneys at Almeida Law Group are investigating whether a class action lawsuit can be filed on behalf of individuals affected by a possible University of San Francisco data breach. According to dark web monitoring sources, a hacker group calling itself thegentlemen claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on University of San Francisco in a post first observed in September 2026, alleging it had gained access to internal company systems. As of this writing, University of San Francisco has not issued a public confirmation of the incident, and the exact scope of any exposed data remains unknown. About University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco (USF) is a private Jesuit university founded in 1855, located on a 55-acre hilltop campus near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. It serves approximately 10,200 students with a 13:1 student-faculty ratio and holds a Carnegie R2 “high research activity” classification. USF operates additional campuses in downtown San Francisco, Pleasanton, and Tokyo, and competes in Division I athletics through the West Coast Conference. As a university, USF handles data belonging to students, faculty, staff, and applicants, including financial aid records given that 92% of its students receive financial aid — making the nature of any compromised data a significant concern.

What Happened?

On September 7th, 2026, Ransomware.live reported that the University of San Francisco was listed as an alleged victim on the dark web leak site operated by The Gentlemen ransomware group. This is an attacker-side allegation only. USF has not issued a public statement confirming any breach, and no independent journalistic or regulatory source has corroborated the claim. The specific data types, data volume, breach date, and any ransom demand connected to this alleged incident have not been confirmed by any authoritative source. A third-party threat intelligence alert from Brinztech flagged the USF listing as signaling a potential double-extortion campaign, but similarly noted the absence of any formal statement from the university.

The Gentlemen is a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) operation that emerged in mid-2025 and is reportedly led by a Russian-speaking threat actor using the aliases “hastalamuerte” and “zeta88.” The group previously operated as ArmCorp, a former affiliate of the Qilin ransomware operation. It employs a double-extortion model, encrypting victims’ systems while threatening to publish stolen data. As of August 2026, Bitsight reported that activity associated with The Gentlemen had increased by 2,100% compared to typical levels, making it one of the fastest-growing ransomware groups currently active. No independent corroborating source specifically confirming the USF incident was found.
