About Medtronic Inc.

Medtronic Inc. is the world’s largest medical device company by revenue, founded in 1949 and headquartered at 710 Medtronic Parkway in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company manufactures pacemakers, defibrillators, insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring systems, heart valves, coronary stents, surgical robotics, ventilators, and a wide range of other medical products. It operates in more than 150 countries, employs approximately 95,000 people, and serves around 79 million patients annually. Because Medtronic’s products and services connect it to patients’ medical and personal information, the data types exposed in this breach — including Social Security numbers, medical information, and dates of birth — carry serious risks for the individuals affected.

What Happened?

Medtronic Inc. was listed in a Texas Attorney General data security breach report (record ID BR-0005149, published June 30th, 2026). According to that filing, the breach affected 3,834,294 individuals in total. The compromised information includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical information, and dates of birth. Medtronic notified affected consumers by U.S. Mail.

The data theft and extortion group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the attack on April 18th, 2026, listing Medtronic on its dark web leak site with an April 21st, 2026 ransom deadline. ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen over 9 million records and approximately 4.1 terabytes of internal corporate data. Medtronic publicly confirmed the breach on April 24th, 2026, and filed a Form 8-K with the SEC. The company stated that its corporate IT systems were breached but that systems supporting medical devices, manufacturing, distribution, and financial reporting are separate and were not affected. ShinyHunters later removed Medtronic from its leak site; no ransom payment has been confirmed. As of early May 2026, Medtronic is already facing at least a half-dozen proposed federal class action lawsuits, including one identified case, Marquardt v. Medtronic, Inc. The lawsuits allege negligence and cite claims under HIPAA, the California Unfair Competition Law, the California Consumers Legal Remedies Act, the FTC Act, and the California Consumer Records Act.

What Should You Do?

If you received a notice from Medtronic or believe you may have been affected, there are several steps you can take right away. Review any Explanation of Benefits statements from your health insurer and check your medical records for services you did not receive, since medical information was among the data exposed. Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name. You can request your free annual credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and monitor them closely for unfamiliar activity. If you spot signs of identity theft, visit IdentityTheft.gov for step-by-step recovery guidance. Because Social Security numbers were involved, a credit freeze is particularly worth considering as a precaution.
