About Baylor Genetics

Baylor Genetics is a joint venture between Baylor College of Medicine and H.U. Group Holdings that provides clinical genetic testing and molecular diagnostics services. Headquartered at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, the company offers testing across a wide range of areas including family planning, pregnancy, neonatal and pediatric care, oncology, rare diseases, hereditary cancer, and metabolic conditions. It has performed over four million tests globally and serves clients in all 50 states and 16 countries. Because genetic testing inherently involves sensitive health, biological, and personal identifying information, a breach at a company like Baylor Genetics carries serious potential consequences for affected individuals.

What Happened?

Baylor Genetics was listed in a California Attorney General sample breach notice filed on August 14th, 2026. According to the notice and the company’s press release issued the same day, Baylor Genetics detected suspicious activity on or around June 15th, 2026 within a limited portion of its information technology environment. The investigation determined that an unauthorized third party accessed certain portions of the company’s network and certain data stored on it between June 11th, 2026 and June 17th, 2026. Baylor Genetics secured affected systems, engaged independent cybersecurity and digital forensic specialists, and coordinated with law enforcement and regulatory authorities. A review to identify affected individuals was completed on or about July 30th, 2026, after which the company began notifying potentially affected individuals.

The data potentially involved includes names, dates of birth, medical testing information, laboratory test results, health insurance information, Social Security numbers, government-issued identification numbers, and financial account information. No ransomware group attribution or threat-actor claims have been identified in connection with this incident. Baylor Genetics has a documented history of prior security incidents, including a 2019 email phishing breach in which unauthorized parties accessed employee email accounts between September 24th, 2019 and November 14th, 2019, potentially affecting health information for a significant number of individuals, and a second breach disclosed in September 2020. The 2026 incident involved network intrusion rather than email compromise, representing a different attack vector.
