Founded in 1974, the company focuses on equity investments in affordable multifamily housing and market-rate apartment communities, and is headquartered at 11 Beacon Street, Suite 325, Boston, Massachusetts. What Happened?
Boston Capital Holdings LP was listed in a Vermont Attorney General breach report summary dated September 17th, 2026, identifying Social Security numbers as the category of data involved.
According to Boston Capital’s own breach notification letter filed with the California Attorney General and dated May 18th, 2026, the company began reviewing a claim involving potential unauthorized access on February 12th, 2026. The investigation determined that a sophisticated cyber actor exploited legitimate companies’ cloud systems to circumvent security tools and gain access to Boston Capital’s environment. Files were accessed and copied between January 16th, 2026 and January 22nd, 2026. The company completed its review of affected files on May 5th, 2026, posted a notice on its website on March 17th, 2026, and began mailing individual notification letters on May 18th, 2026. Boston Capital notified federal law enforcement and is offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. The breach is reported to have affected approximately 16,000 people across multiple states. The data involved varied by individual and included names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, other government identification numbers, and financial account information (without access codes).
The ransomware group LeakNet has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to dark web monitoring service Breachsense, LeakNet is attributed as the threat actor, with an alleged leak size of 20 GB first observed on March 31st, 2026. Barnow and Associates, a law firm investigating the incident, reported that LeakNet posted information related to the breach on April 22nd, 2026. These are attacker-side allegations and have not been confirmed by Boston Capital or any regulator. Boston Capital’s own notification letter describes a “sophisticated cyber actor” but does not name the attacker or characterize the incident as ransomware. LeakNet is a ransomware operation active since late 2024 that practices double extortion. Several law firms, including Murphy Law Firm, Federman & Sherwood, Dapeer Law, Barnow and Associates, and Emery Reddy, have publicly announced investigations into potential class action claims on behalf of affected individuals. No filed class action complaint has been located as of the research date.
