What Happened?
Craneware, Inc. was listed in an HHS Office for Civil Rights breach portal report filed September 2nd, 2026, identifying the incident as a hacking/IT incident affecting a network server. The filing lists 501 individuals affected, a figure that is commonly used as a placeholder when the final count remains under investigation.
On July 20th, 2026, Craneware disclosed the incident through a regulatory notice filed with the London Stock Exchange. The company confirmed that unauthorized access to a subset of its data environment occurred, and that a significant volume of file names were viewed and exfiltrated. Craneware stated that a percentage of employee data and a subset of customer and partner records were accessed and exfiltrated, while describing much of the compromised data as non-sensitive or already-public regulatory information. The company said the attack was contained without disruption to customer services, and external forensic specialists confirmed no residual indicators of compromise. Craneware notified both the UK Information Commissioner’s Office and the FBI. The company has not disclosed the attack vector, the identity of the threat actor, or the duration of the unauthorized access. The specific categories of personal information involved have not been publicly disclosed.
Separately, the ransomware group “Chaos” posted The Craneware Group on its dark web leak site on July 28th, 2026, claiming to have extracted 960 GB of data described as regulatory data. This is an unverified attacker allegation and has not been confirmed by the company, any regulator, or law enforcement. As of the research date, multiple law firms have announced investigations into potential class actions arising from this incident, including Shamis & Gentile P.A. (as of July 22nd, 2026), Ahdoot & Wolfson, PC, and DataBreachClassAction.io (as of July 21st, 2026). No filed lawsuits or settlements have been confirmed.
