About Hancock Regional Hospital

Hancock Regional Hospital is a full-service community hospital located at 801 N. State St., Greenfield, Indiana, established in 1951. It is part of Hancock Health, an independent health network serving Hancock County and surrounding areas. The hospital provides 24-hour emergency services, surgery, obstetric services, critical care, oncology, home healthcare, and a range of inpatient and outpatient services. Because this is a healthcare provider, patients who received care there may have shared sensitive personal and health information with the organization.

What Happened?

Hancock Regional Hospital was listed in a HHS Office for Civil Rights breach portal report submitted on July 6th, 2026. The incident is categorized as an Unauthorized Access/Disclosure involving email, and it affected 1,530 individuals. No business associate was involved. The specific data types exposed and the precise mechanism of the breach were not specified in the filing, and no public notification letter, press release, or independent media coverage of this particular incident has been identified.

Hancock Regional Hospital has a documented history of cybersecurity incidents. In January 2018, the hospital was struck by a SamSam ransomware attack in which attackers accessed hospital systems through a third-party vendor’s remote-access account and encrypted hospital data. The hospital paid approximately $55,000 in bitcoin to restore access. The FBI confirmed at the time that patient data was not exfiltrated. Separately, Hancock Health settled a class action lawsuit, resolved around late 2025, alleging that website tracking pixels had disclosed patient portal users’ protected health information to third parties without consent between January 2020 and December 2023, with eligible class members receiving $25 payments. The July 2026 email-based incident appears to be a distinct event unrelated to either of those prior matters.

What Should You Do?

If you received notice that your information was involved in this breach, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself. Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to make it harder for someone to open new accounts in your name. Review your credit reports for unfamiliar activity by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com, where you can request free reports. Because this is a healthcare provider, you should also review any Explanation of Benefits statements from your insurer and check your medical records for services you do not recognize, which could indicate medical identity theft. If you discover suspicious activity, report it at IdentityTheft.gov for step-by-step guidance on recovering from identity theft.
