What Happened?

According to a press release issued by Hawaii Family Dental on August 26th, 2026, the organization discovered on July 20th, 2026 that an unauthorized person had accessed an email account containing patient information between July 19th and July 20th, 2026. The affected account was secured the same day the breach was discovered. The company confirmed that the information potentially accessed includes patient name, date of birth, phone number, email address, mailing address, dental insurance information, portions of medical information, and dental treatment information. The organization explicitly stated that Social Security numbers and financial account information were not involved.
Separately, the ransomware group Qilin claimed responsibility for an attack on Hawaii Family Dental in a leak-site posting dated July 31st, 2026 — eleven days after the company’s stated discovery date. Third-party cybersecurity sources HookPhish and RedPacket Security also attributed the incident to Qilin. These are attacker-side allegations posted on a dark web leak site and have not been confirmed by Hawaii Family Dental or regulators; the company’s own press release does not reference ransomware and describes the incident as an email compromise. As of available reporting, attorneys working with ClassAction.org are investigating whether a class action lawsuit can be filed on behalf of affected patients and employees, but no lawsuit has been formally filed.
