About Madera Community Hospital

Madera Community Hospital is a not-for-profit General Acute Care Hospital located at 1250 E. Almond Avenue in Madera, California. Founded in 1971, the hospital has 103 licensed beds and serves approximately 160,000 residents in Madera County and the surrounding Central Valley. The hospital closed in late December 2022 due to financial pressures and filed for bankruptcy in March 2023. It was acquired by American Advanced Management, Inc. in February 2024 with support from a $57 million state loan and reopened on March 18th, 2025. The cyberattack at the center of this breach notice occurred approximately two months after that reopening.

What Happened?

Madera Community Hospital was listed in a California Attorney General sample breach notice filed on July 14th, 2026. According to that notice, on May 29th, 2025, the hospital detected suspicious activity in its computer network. A forensic investigation conducted in June 2025 found that an unauthorized third party had access to the network for two days in late May 2025. The forensic investigation did not identify any specific files that were taken, but the hospital states it has “reason to believe that a third party acquired files from a portion of our network.” The hospital also states it found no definitive proof that the acquired files contained personal information or protected health information, and no evidence that any potentially impacted data was released publicly or shared with others.

The data types involved are not specifically enumerated in the notice — the relevant fields appear as template placeholders, meaning the categories of information vary by individual. The hospital engaged a data-review firm to analyze the potentially impacted files, and results were received in April 2026. The California Attorney General notice was filed on July 14th, 2026, roughly 14 months after the initial incident. No ransomware group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack based on available reporting. Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring is offered to affected individuals, and Kroll is identified as the breach response vendor. The total number of affected individuals has not been publicly reported.
