About Mariner Wealth Advisors, LLC
Mariner Wealth Advisors, LLC is a privately held national wealth management firm founded in 2006 and headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas. It is one of the largest registered investment advisors in the United States, offering services that include wealth planning, investment management, tax planning, estate planning, trust services, insurance solutions, and retirement planning. Because the firm works with clients’ financial accounts and personal identifying information, a breach involving names, account numbers, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth carries meaningful risk of identity theft and financial fraud.
What Happened?
Mariner Wealth Advisors, LLC was listed in a Maine Attorney General data breach filing reported on June 1, 2026. The incident was an external system breach — hacking — in which a criminal third party accessed the cloud application accounts of three Mariner associates and downloaded certain files. The downloaded files contained affected individuals’ names, account numbers, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers or other government ID numbers. A total of 8,995 individuals were affected. Mariner notified consumers by written notice dated May 29, 2026 — approximately six months after the breach was discovered on November 24, 2025. Mariner stated that financial accounts, investment accounts, and other client accounts are held on entirely separate systems that were not affected by this incident. The company has engaged third-party researchers to monitor online sources for signs of data misuse and reports that none has been found. Federal law enforcement and regulatory authorities were contacted. No ransomware group or threat actor has been publicly attributed to the incident.
This breach is separate from an earlier incident involving Newport Advisory, LLC — now doing business as Mariner Wealth Advisors — in which unauthorized actors accessed and copied files from Newport’s network in late December 2024, detected January 12, 2025, affecting 9,323 individuals. The current November 2025 breach is a distinct incident.
