What Happened?
Maternal Fetal Medicine Associates, PLLC, along with Carnegie Hill Imaging for Women and Carnegie Women’s Health, experienced a data breach that may have compromised the personal and medical data of current and former patients. Suspicious activity was first detected on September 16, 2024, when unauthorized access to their internal systems was discovered.
A forensic investigation later revealed that the unauthorized party had access to the practices’ network for more than six weeks, from July 30 to September 16, 2024. During that time, certain files were accessed or downloaded without permission.
What Information Was Involved?
The compromised files contained a range of sensitive personal and health-related information, including:
- Full name
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Social Security number
- Credit card information
- Bank account information
- Clinical diagnoses and conditions
- Lab results
- Medications
How Did Maternal Fetal Medicine Associates Respond?
After identifying the breach, Maternal Fetal Medicine Associates and its affiliated practices took several steps to investigate and mitigate the damage:
- Engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation
- Reported the incident to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
- Disclosed the breach to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office
- Posted public notices on their websites
- Initiated the process of notifying impacted individuals by mail
Notification letters have not yet been sent but are expected once the full scope of the breach is determined. At least 501 individuals are known to have been affected.
