What Happened?
On April 3, 2025, NASCAR discovered unauthorized access to its internal network. Following this discovery, the organization launched its incident response plan and began working with an external cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach. Law enforcement was also notified.
The investigation revealed that hackers accessed NASCAR’s systems between March 31 and April 3, 2025. During this time, attackers were able to exfiltrate files containing personal information. While NASCAR has not disclosed how many individuals were affected, it has confirmed that personally identifiable information was compromised.
What Information Was Involved?
The data compromised in the breach includes:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
The exposure of Social Security numbers increases the risk of identity theft, fraud, and long-term financial harm for victims.
How Did NASCAR Respond?
Upon identifying the breach, NASCAR took several immediate actions:
- Activated its incident response plan
- Engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to conduct a thorough investigation
- Reported the incident to law enforcement
- Notified the Attorney General’s Offices of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire
- Began sending notification letters to affected individuals
NASCAR is also offering affected individuals either one or two years of complimentary credit and identity monitoring services to help reduce the risk of identity theft.
While NASCAR has not confirmed the attackers’ identities, the Medusa ransomware group later claimed responsibility and demanded a $4 million ransom, stating they had stolen approximately 1 terabyte of data. NASCAR has not publicly verified these claims.
