About PeoplesBank

PeoplesBank is the largest mutually held community bank in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut, headquartered in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It provides personal and business banking services, including checking and savings accounts, home mortgages, home equity lines of credit, construction loans, and wealth management services. The bank operates approximately 20 full-service banking centers and is organized as a mutual holding company (PeoplesBancorp, MHC).

What Happened?

PeoplesBank was listed in a Vermont Attorney General breach report summary dated September 28th, 2026. The filing identifies PeoplesBank as a Financial Services organization and reports that two categories of sensitive data were involved: Government ID Numbers and Biometric Information. The total number of affected individuals and the method of attack were not reported in publicly available sources.

PeoplesBank also appears on the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs’ list of data breach notification letters filed in April 2026, suggesting the incident may have been disclosed to Massachusetts regulators several months before the Vermont filing. No public reporting has identified a specific threat actor, ransomware group, or attack vector connected to this incident, and no litigation or class action filings were found specifically tied to this breach.

Key Facts at a Glance

What Should You Do?

If you received a notice from PeoplesBank, take steps now to protect yourself. Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name. Monitor your existing bank and financial accounts closely for any unauthorized activity and review your credit reports for free at AnnualCreditReport.com. Because government ID numbers were involved, watch for signs of identity theft such as unexpected bills, collection notices, or government correspondence that does not belong to you. If you believe your identity has been misused, report it at IdentityTheft.gov, where you can also create a personalized recovery plan.
