About The Association for Neurologically Impaired Brain Injured
The Association for Neurologically Impaired Brain Injured Children (ANIBIC) is a nonprofit healthcare provider based in Oakland Gardens, Queens, New York. Founded in 1975, the organization has served individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 50 years, offering educational, vocational, and residential programs, day habilitation, family support and case management, respite care, guardianship, and counseling to individuals from age five through adulthood. Because ANIBIC serves a vulnerable population and collects personal information as part of delivering those services, a breach affecting its records carries particular significance for the people in its care.
What Happened?
The Association for Neurologically Impaired Brain Injured was listed in an HHS Office for Civil Rights breach portal report as having experienced a hacking/IT incident involving a network server. According to ANIBIC’s own breach notice published on its website, the organization detected suspicious activity in its computer network and launched an investigation with third-party cybersecurity experts, also notifying law enforcement. That investigation determined an unauthorized party had access to ANIBIC’s systems between March 7th, 2025 and March 8th, 2026—a window of approximately twelve months. On May 18th, 2026, the investigation confirmed that the unauthorized party had accessed certain files containing program member information. ANIBIC began mailing notification letters to affected individuals on July 17th, 2026. A total of 1,918 individuals were affected. The data involved included names and one or more of the following: contact information, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth. The breach notice available online appeared truncated at that point, and additional data categories may have been listed but could not be confirmed from the visible text. No ransomware group has been attributed to this incident in available sources.

What Should You Do?
If you received a notification letter from ANIBIC, review it carefully for any identity theft protection enrollment offer and note any deadline to sign up. Regardless of whether protection is offered, you should place a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—and monitor your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries. You can request free annual credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Because Social Security numbers and dates of birth were among the data types involved, staying alert to signs of identity theft is especially important; if you suspect misuse, visit IdentityTheft.gov for step-by-step guidance. Given that ANIBIC is a healthcare provider, you should also review any Explanation of Benefits statements you receive and check your medical records for services you did not receive.
